On this International Cooperative Day, celebrated every first Saturday in July, there is a lot to commemorate in Brazil. First and foremost, this business model is governed by people, with common interests, who seek results that satisfy everyone. In addition, cooperatives contribute to creating a fair future for those involved and for the community. This is achieved by promoting democratic management by members, economic efficiency and social commitment.
International Cooperative Day
According to the 2023 Yearbook of the OCB System (Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives), our country has 4,693 companies that follow this model. In all, there are more than 20.4 million cooperative members and around 525,000 employees. These cooperatives are present in more than 1,415 municipalities and are therefore key players in promoting development in the Brazilian states.
In Minas Gerais, where our Cooxupé headquarters are located, the numbers are also impressive. After all, cooperatives in Minas Gerais earned R$118.4 billion in 2022, according to the Ocemg System’s 2023 Yearbook. The Regional Cooperative of Coffee Growers in Guaxupé even stood out in the publication by taking first place among the associations in the agricultural sector. This result is a source of pride for our more than 19,000 cooperative families, who produce high-quality coffee that is exported to 50 countries on all continents.
Trust and unity
At Cooxupé, the members are aware that they are the owners of the cooperative. And with this in mind, we have built a relationship of trust and unity that has lasted for 92 years, more than 65 of which have been exclusively dedicated to the coffee business. In short, we strengthen this connection with every challenge overcome and victory won. In addition, our job is to guide our members in order to offer them dignity and income.
Another advantage that cooperative members find in belonging to a cooperative like Cooxupé is competitiveness. Mainly because they have the same opportunity to sell their coffee to the foreign market as large producers. It’s worth remembering that over 97% of our members are small producers who make their living from family farming. In addition, every year Cooxupé distributes its surpluses in the accounts. In this way, we bring more social equality and income to coffee growers.
In keeping with the seven principles of cooperativism, companies that follow this business model promote, above all, education, the economic development of members and the progress of communities. At Cooxupé, our mission is to offer great opportunities and quality of life to our member families. So, we congratulate you all on International Cooperative Day. What drives us is the cooperative spirit and, for this reason, we always seek to evolve in union with people.
